Percentages come up everywhere — exam results, shopping discounts, salary increases, GST calculations, and bank interest. This guide explains the four most common percentage calculations with formulas, examples, and a free online calculator.

1. Marks Percentage Calculator

The most common need for Indian students — calculating your overall percentage from marks obtained.

Formula: Marks % = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100
Example:
Marks obtained: 385 | Total marks: 500
Percentage = (385 ÷ 500) × 100 = 77%

Grade and Division Reference (Indian Board Exams)

Percentage RangeGrade / Division
90% and aboveA+ / Distinction
75% – 89%First Division
60% – 74%Second Division
45% – 59%Third Division
Below 45%Fail (varies by board)

Note: Passing percentage varies by board and subject. Always check your specific board's rules.

2. Percentage Increase / Decrease

Used to calculate salary hikes, price changes, or population growth.

% Increase: ((New Value - Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100
% Decrease: ((Old Value - New Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100
Salary example:
Old salary: ₹25,000 | New salary: ₹30,000
Increase % = ((30,000 - 25,000) ÷ 25,000) × 100 = 20% hike
Price drop example:
Old price: ₹1,200 | New price: ₹900
Decrease % = ((1,200 - 900) ÷ 1,200) × 100 = 25% decrease

3. Discount Calculator

Used for shopping — find the final price after a discount percentage.

Discount Amount: Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)
Final Price: Original Price - Discount Amount
Shopping example:
Original price: ₹2,000 | Discount: 25%
Discount amount = 2,000 × 25/100 = ₹500
Final price = 2,000 - 500 = ₹1,500
Online Shopping Tip: Many sites show "upto X% off" but the actual discount per item may be less. Always verify: Final Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount%/100).

4. What is X% of Y?

The most basic percentage question — used for GST, interest, and everyday calculations.

Formula: Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y
Example 1 — GST: What is 18% of ₹10,000?
= (18 ÷ 100) × 10,000 = ₹1,800 (GST amount)
Example 2 — Commission: What is 5% of ₹85,000 (annual salary)?
= (5 ÷ 100) × 85,000 = ₹4,250 (commission)
